Half the battle of a Tulum trip from New York is decided before you ever leave Queens. Here’s the honest version of how to do it well — the same guide we send guests who ask.
Is there a direct flight from JFK to Tulum?
Yes. JetBlue flies nonstop from JFK to Tulum’s own airport — Felipe Carrillo Puerto International (TQO) — in about 4 hours 25 minutes. It’s currently the only nonstop between JFK and Tulum, running roughly daily. The route opened in June 2024, and it changed the math for New Yorkers: you can leave Brooklyn in the morning and be swimming above the jungle canopy by mid-afternoon.
If Newark is your easier airport, United also lists Tulum service from EWR — we’ll cover that route in its own guide.
Should you fly into Tulum (TQO) or Cancún (CUN)?
The real decision. Both work; they trade convenience against flexibility.
| Tulum (TQO) | Cancún (CUN) | |
|---|---|---|
| Nonstop from JFK | JetBlue, roughly daily | Many flights daily, all NYC airports |
| Flight time | ~4h 25m | ~4h 15m |
| Drive to Aldea Zama | 30–40 minutes | 90 minutes–2 hours |
| Fare flexibility | One carrier — prices swing harder | Competition keeps fares lower |
| Best for | Shortest total travel day | Cheapest fares, most schedule options |
Our honest take: if the JetBlue nonstop lines up with your dates at a fare you like, take it — landing 30 minutes from the penthouse beats a two-hour van ride after a 4.5-hour flight every time. If TQO pricing spikes (one carrier means less competition) or the schedule doesn’t fit, CUN’s sheer volume of flights usually wins on price, and the transfer south is a well-worn routine.
Book winter dates early either way. New York’s cold-season escapes are exactly when both routes are busiest — two to three months ahead is the comfortable window, more for holiday weeks.
Getting to JFK: train, subway, or cab
Here’s the thing about a beach destination: it packs light. With a carry-on and a swimsuit, the train isn’t the budget compromise — it’s genuinely the easy way.
From Grand Central, Penn Station, or Atlantic Terminal, the LIRR reaches Jamaica in about 21 minutes ($5.25 off-peak, $7.25 peak). Buy your ticket in the official MTA TrainTime app before you leave — iPhone or Android — so boarding is just a tap, not a ticket-machine line. From Jamaica, the AirTrain runs to the terminals in 8–13 minutes ($8.75 — tap the same credit card or phone you use for the subway; nothing to buy or set up). Around $14–16 total, no traffic variable.
A few tips from guests who’ve done it:
- No OMNY card needed — any tap-to-pay credit card or phone wallet works at the AirTrain gates
- Coming from Lower Manhattan, the A train to Howard Beach AirTrain can beat the Jamaica route
- Want door service without cab pricing? Shared airport shuttles run from Grand Central for around $27 — a solid middle option with luggage
- For a 6 a.m. flight or a trip with more bags than hands, the yellow-cab flat fare (plus tolls and tip) buys you a door-to-terminal morning — worth it
When you land
Whichever airport you choose, the last leg is easy to get right: our hosts Gaby and Luli arrange private transfers from both TQO and CUN directly to the property. The full rundown of every option — private transfer, the ADO bus from Cancún, rental cars — lives in our Getting There guide.
Where you’ll stay
We wrote this guide for guests of Imagine Tulum Penthouse — three lock-off suites on the top floor of a boutique building in Aldea Zama, bookable in any combination: one suite, two, or all three as a full 3-bedroom penthouse for up to six. Aldea Zama sits between the beach and town, calm and walkable; the beach itself is about a mile away — a 5-minute bike or taxi ride.
When it’s 28°F on your walk to the subway, it’s 82°F on the rooftop. That contrast is the whole point.
Frequently asked questions
Which airlines fly nonstop from JFK to Tulum?
JetBlue is currently the only airline with nonstop service from JFK to Tulum’s Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO), flying the route roughly daily in about 4 hours 25 minutes.
How far is the Tulum airport from Aldea Zama?
About 20 kilometers — a 30–40 minute drive, sometimes longer in peak traffic while the bypass road around town remains incomplete. Private transfers can be arranged directly to the property.
Is it cheaper to fly into Cancún or Tulum?
Usually Cancún. Many airlines compete on CUN routes from all three New York airports, while TQO has a single nonstop carrier from JFK — so CUN fares are typically lower and more stable, at the cost of a 90-minute-to-2-hour drive south.
How early should I book winter flights from New York to Tulum?
Two to three months ahead is comfortable for most winter dates; add more lead time around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, when both the JetBlue nonstop and Cancún routes fill fastest.
What documents do I need to fly from JFK to Tulum?
A passport valid for your stay. U.S. citizens don’t need a visa for tourism in Mexico; you’ll complete an entry registration on arrival.
What’s the cheapest way to get to JFK with luggage?
The LIRR to Jamaica plus the AirTrain — about $14–16 total and roughly 35 minutes from Midtown, with no traffic risk. The AirTrain takes any tap-to-pay credit card or phone wallet, so there’s nothing to buy or set up. From Lower Manhattan, the A train to Howard Beach AirTrain is a solid alternative.
